Cape Gravel 2024:
A Celebration of Gravel, Scenery, and Cycling Legends
This year’s Cape Gravel was more than just a ride—it was a gathering of cycling royalty!
The event welcomed World Gravel and Road Gran Fondo Champion Jonny Hooglerand, World Track Champion Roger Kluge, and South Africa’s very own braai legend, Jan Braai, all joining in to experience the fun, camaraderie, and stunning landscapes of the Western Cape. Together with a diverse group of passionate riders, they set out to make this edition of Cape Gravel an unforgettable adventure.
Day 1
The opening day featured a reimagined 110 km route designed for maximum enjoyment. Riders departed from the historic town of Swellendam, navigating rolling, smooth gravel roads that meander through the scenic Overberg region. Along the way, they passed through Riviersonderend, a peaceful countryside stop, before arriving in Greyton, a picturesque village known for its cozy cottages and vibrant atmosphere. With flowing trails and stunning views, Day 1 set the perfect tone for an incredible gravel adventure.
Day 2
The second day was a thrilling 82 km ride from Greyton to Franschhoek, showcasing the Western Cape's rugged beauty. Riders began their journey on scenic gravel roads before tackling the iconic Rusty Gate climb. This challenging ascent, with steep gradients and loose rocks, offered both a physical test and breathtaking views.
From there, the route descended into the lush Franschhoek Valley, renowned for its world-class vineyards and scenic charm. The grand finale awaited with the ascent of Franschhoek Pass—a winding mountain road offering panoramic vistas and an exhilarating descent into Franschhoek.
